Touch of Country & Braveheart Women

The Barker Hanger in Santa Monica was transformed into a Wild West Saloon when the Women’s Guild of Cedars Sinai presented their Touch of Country Gala.  Vera and Paul Guerin were honored for their support of the world-renowned medical center, and their commitment to causes related to education, Judaism and Israel as well as medicine.

The highlight of the evening was a special performance by Miss Country Music herself, Wynonna Judd who lost 60 pounds and looked fabulous.  She credits the weight loss to daily walks, which clear her mind and spirit.  Currently the 46 year old performer is also on a financial recovery program, and has banned herself from using credit cards except in serious emergency,

She knows that music can heal (particularly after her nasty divorce) and she and her Mom, Naomi (who suffers from hepatitis C), are “Back For One Last Encore”, spreading the joy.  Kudos to Co-Chairs, Caryl Golden and Brenda Fritz, and the Women’s Guild, who have raised over $50 million to improve the quality of life for patients everywhere.

Our own Century Plaza Hotel hosted more than 1000 women from all over the world, to celebrate female empowerment, and to honor five fabulous women who have made a huge difference in our world.  Among these were Sherri Shepherd, host of The Newlywed Game and co-host of The View; Marianne Williamson, Best selling author & lecturer;  vocalist and composer Sussan Deyhim; Dr. Kristi Funk, renowned breast cancer surgeon; and animal rights activist Tippi Hedren.

Ellie Drake, Founder of Braveheart Women, said, “I am honored to recognize these ladies who encourage women of all ages to discover their own voices.  Presenters included Shannon Tweed (Mrs. Gene Simmons) actor Billy Zane, and comedian/actress (Community), Yvette Nicole Brown.

Among those congratulating the honorees was Sheryl Crowe, a breast cancer survivor, who called Dr. Funk, a “real rock star”.  And the other ladies of the View — Joy, Barbara, Elizabeth and Whoopie, recognized Sherri as their real inspiration on a daily basis.

Congratulations to Paul Ryan who hosted and produced the awards for the second time.  Takes a strong and compassionate man to recognize the power of Braveheart Women!
