LA theater scene: this Fall super-cool music & comedy at NoHo’s El Portal Theatre

Presenting feel-good crowd-pleasing shows, the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood has something for everyone as people emerge and gather for great entertainment.

Super-cool concerts featuring legendary musicians, and a show filled laughs and hysterical observations about our ever-changing lives are part of the great lineup coming to NoHo’s historic El Portal Theatre the Fall of 2022.

 * Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 8 pm, the El Portal has GRANT GEISSMAN’s ‘BLOOZ’ Concert featuring selections from the superb jazz guitar great’s new CD. Over the decades Geissman has been part of beloved and iconic music releases. It was Geissman who did the iconic electric guitar solo on Chuck Mangione’s “Feels So Good,” and there are musical surprises ahead with his show that highlights his love for the Blues and so much more.

 But wait there’s more! Here’s a fun fact about Geissman: Grant is an expert and respected historian relating to Mad Magazine and EC Comics. So cartoon images and pictures from Mad and EC will be seen on the big screen during the show to illustrate his music. Geissman wrote several books on the history of Mad Magazine and EC Comics, and the visuals during his show will feature some of the memorable artwork from his historic Mad/EC collection. It’s just another big ‘Wow’ that awaits the folks who come and enjoy his ‘feel so good’ music at the El Portal.

 * Sunday, September 25, 2022 at 3 pm, LOVE, DOLLY starring the sparkling Kim Eberhardt. It’s Dolly celebration and a show for multigenerational folks with a great sense of humor. Kim’s vocals are pure Dolly that will thrill fans of the iconic American artist.

 It seems Kim was sprinkle with fairy dust and magic was created with the energy and excitement of the real Dolly Parton and all the positivity she embodies. The first half of the show is about Dolly’s humble beginnings and the songs that launched her career. The second half Kim comes out drenched in glitter and fringe, rhinestone boots, a big wig change, and features the philosophy of Dolly’s life through her songs. The show also offers lots of surprises.

 * Friday, October 7, 2022 at 8 pm, Saturday, Oct. 8, at 8 pm, and Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 pm, STARING INTO NOTHING: A NEW ROCK OPERA will be presented.

 After releasing two albums under the name of Staring Into Nothing, the collaborative songwriting partnership between Kurt Barabas and Steve Rogers has evolved into a live stage production featuring all new music. “Staring Into Nothing,” the new musical/rock opera, explores the impact of mass media, social media and the digital information age on the quality of our lives. It asks and attempts to answer the age-old philosopher’s question: “What Is Good And What Is Not?” in a world of cell phones, tablets, email and the 24-hour news cycle. The show is directed by Broadway’s Jeffrey Polk with acclaimed musician Denny Fongheiser as producer.

 * Sunday, October 16, 2022, FRITZ COLEMAN’s UNASSISTED LIVING comedy show is in the El Portal’s intimate Monroe Forum for two shows at 4 pm (sold out) and 7 pm. The hilarious new standup show will be recorded as Fritz explores everything we’ve  just lived through during the pandemic. Coleman’s at the top of his game as he explores being a loner on lockdown, the fun and fear of getting the shots, friends turning vegan, and being a parent/grandparent dealing with school on Zoom. Fritz offers insight on surviving a 40-year career as a television ‘weather guesser,’ and laments there’s no vaccination for GETTING OLD. With his hysterical observations, no one puts into words our common experiences better than Fritz Coleman, and UNASSISTED LIVING is a must-see at the El Portal. 

 * Sunday, November 13, 2022 at 3 pm, THE WRECKING CREW: “GOLDEN HITS WITH A SPLASH OF MOTOWN!” is a wonderful opportunity to experience a significant slice of musical history. It is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME SHOW! You will want to tell your children and your grandchildren you were here to see this historic concert.

 Original legendary members of The Wrecking Crew: Don Randi, Don Peake and Chuck Berghofer, will play along with a special appearance by Lamont Dozier, Jr.  The stellar band will have some of LA’s most talented singers for a night that pays tribute to The Wrecking Crew’s “Golden Hits” with a Splash of Motown. It will be a multimedia journey highlighting songs by many of the artists who were backed by these talented musicians.

 Audiences will also get to hear many of the fascinating behind-the-scenes stories from The Wrecking Crew’s history as session musicians who played on literally thousands of recordings in the 1960s and early 1970s. This includes several hundred Top 40 hits by major recording artists like The Beach Boys, Bobby Darin, Sonny & Cher, Glen Campbell (who was also a member of The Wrecking Crew), Elvis, Nancy Sinatra, and more, and they worked with producers such as Brian Wilson, Lou Adler, Mike Post, and Phil Spector (“Wall of Sound”) to create some of the best loved songs of all time.
