ICON awards at UCLA

Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda might have been adversaries in the flick, Monster-in-Law, but it was J.LO who presented the ICON Award to Fonda at the UCLA Longevity Center’s 20th Anniversary gala at the Beverly Hilton.

These Awards were created to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions throughout their lives, and who are true icons of health and active living. When Lopez, “The Most Beautiful Woman in the World” (according to People Magazine), introduced Fonda, she announced Fonda’s credits as:  actress, fitness guru, author & activist for human rights — not to mention she was a two-time winner of the Academy Awards.

Fonda did revolutionize the fitness industry with the release of Jane Fonda’s Workout, and her national best seller, “My Life So Far”.  A follow up book, focusing on aging is in the works — as well as a series of fitness DVD’S aimed the boomer generation

Sharon Linkletter, daughter of Art Linkletter, (who lived well into his 90’s) and co-founded the Center 20 year ago  — presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to James Collins (owner of Sizzler Steak House Restaurants) for his generous contributions.

Also honored was Dr. Bradley R. Straatsman, who received kudos for his work in science and medicine.

Tony Award winning actor, Jason Alexander, acted as emcee of the event, and introduced Kimberly Locke, of American Idol fame. The diminutive actor (with the huge personality) seemed overwhelmed by the extreme pulchritude on stage.

It was that kind of night — full of beauty, major accomplishments, and a commitment to improve life as we age.

Some of the prestigious guests in attendance included actors Peter Fonda, George Segal, (who co-starred with Jane, in Fun With Dick & Jane); Theba and John Sussman of Glee; and Dr. Gary Small, Director of UCLA Longevity Center, whose efforts are to enrich our (hopefully long) lives!
