Sports Stars & Superstars Slug it Out for Cancer

The Century Plaza Hotel was the scene of an event that brought out the likes of Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron and Denzel Washington to raise funds for the Harold Pump Foundation.  Twin brothers, David and Dana, two of the most influential forces in college basketball started this organization in 1999, when their Dad, Harold lost his life to cancer.  Since then, the foundation has given more than $3.7 million toward fighting this dread disease.

Two times Academy Award winning actor, Denzel Washington said he was very proud of the Pump brothers, and their ability to gather people from both sports and entertainment for a special cause.  He stated, “Even though I played basketball at Fordham, I am in awe of the athletes here tonight.”

It isn’t easy to intimidate Denzel, but when speaking about Ali, he stated, “Muhammad’s the King” – With all these great athletes, he’s the king of all, and its an honor to be honored with him!

Others paying homage to these legends included Sugar Ray Leonard, Julius Erving, Eddie Murphy and Brian McKnight.  A history making evening on the Hollywood Beat!

Another evening of note was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, when Braveheart Women celebrated their first anniversary.

The Social Networking site www.Braveheartwomen.com has just been recognized by Google as the Premiere online networking site for women.

Launched in 200 by author and inspiration speaker, Ellie Drake, their purpose is to bring together women from around the world, to share and receive inspiration.

On Oct. 9, 2010 their annual Braveheart awards will be presented to six women and one man at the Hyatt Regency. Last year’s inaugural ceremony honorees included Dr. Maya Angelou, Carol Channing and Philanthropist Kate Edelman Johnson.  We can’t wait to hear about the prestigious honorees set for this year!

And another upcoming event you won’t want to miss is the Premier Opening Night for Sam Shephards True West at the new Whitmore Eclectic Lyric Theatre on La Brea.  The late great actor James Whitmore and his talented family have established this new theatre group, which will produce 5 plays, 6-month theatre calendar offering various theatrical and educational workshops.  The opening night is Thursday, September 9th, and many celebs are slated to attend.  For information go to www.whitmoreeclectic.com Hope to see you there!
