Hollywood Beat – “Genesis Awards”

Genesis Awards

Tippi Hedren has always been my idol.  After seeing her battling hundreds of viscous birds in the classic Hitchcock film, The Birds, it was ironic that the beautiful blonde actress later became an animal activist.

Over 25 years ago, she established Shambala Preserve, a major sanctuary for abandoned captive born exotic felines in Acton, California.  Currently, she is “den mother” to 68 plus animals, including African lions, Royal Bengal tigers, leopards, and cougars, cast off by circuses, private owners and zoos. She is also birth mother to actress Melanie Griffith, who presented the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Humane Society at the Genesis Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Melanie was with her handsome hubby, Antonio Bandaras – almost unrecognizable with a bushy white beard, and she echoed her Mother’s sentiment that no one should ever buy a wild animal of any kind as a pet.

The Genesis Awards recognize the major news and entertainment media for producing outstanding work in film, TV and print, who raise awareness of animal issues.  Among the winners were: Hotel for Dogs (Outstanding Feature Film); Family Guy (Sid Caesar Comedy Award); Ellen Degeneres Show (Outstanding Talk Show); and Jane Velez-Mitchell (Outstanding TV Newsmagazine).

Keely and Pierce Brosman presented the Outstanding Documentary film award to The Cove, for their expose of Japan’s shameful dolphin slaughter, and a standing ovation went to Maj. Brian Dennis and his dog, Nubs, who traveled more than 70 miles in the Iraqi desert to find him. Nubs was an honored guest at the event, as 2010 was definitely the Year of the Dog at the Genesis Awards!

Kudos to Wayne Pacelle, President & CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, Beverly Kaskey, Senior Director of the Hollywood Office, and their hard working committee for helping to make it a better world for our fellow creatures.  A special tribute to the late Gretchen Wyler Founder of the Art Trust, “Animals should have the right to run if they have legs – swim if they have fins – and fly if they have wings.”
