UNICEF Ball & Totem at the Pier

So many Awards — so little time!  Right on the heels of his winning the Golden Globe for his role in HBO’s Behind the Candelabra, Michael Douglas was honored with the Danny Kaye Humanitarian Peace Award for his commitment to the survival and wellbeing of the world’s children.  Matt Damon, Douglas co-star in the film based on Liberace’s life, served as emcee of the exciting event, along with Producer Jerry Weintraub. In accepting his award, Douglas stated, “Danny Kaye was the first person that demonstrated the power of celebrity, and how it could be used for good in the  world”.

Damon joked about his relationship with Douglas, and compared themselves to Golden Globes co-hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.  He also related his own experience with the organization, which has saved the lives of children for the last 70 years.  Much to his surprise, he also was honored for his efforts to combat the global water crisis.

The entertainment featured Dancing with the Stars Cheryl Burke and Val Chmerkovskly performing a torrid tango, and Tony and Emmy Award winning actress Kristin Chenoweth who ended the show with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.

A fitting close to an evening of promise and faith that the children of the world will survive and grow.

A slew of celebs strolled down the red carpet opening of Cirque du Soleil’s fantastic production of TOTEM at the Santa Monica Pier. Among those posing with various TOTEM characters were Allison Janney, Paris Hilton, Jason Alexander, Neve Campbell and Neil Patrick Harris along with his life- partner and two adorable offspring

The mesmerizing, mysterious, mind-blowing Totem was the winner of the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Unique Theatrical Experience, and features a cast of 46 acrobats, actors, musicians and singers.  Written and directed by Robert Lepage, Totem takes us on a journey of the human species from the original amphibian (a giant turtle,) and demonstrates Man’s ties to other species, and his infinite potential.

We learned that Totem is the first Cirque Big Top show to be created in a way to be adapted to other arenas and other venues, from the very outset.  You can have the opportunity to view this performance until March 16th.

As L.A. Weekly stated:  “Go — this production bursts with wonder of mankind’s feats”.
