Sunday, November 1—The Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust (LAMOTH) in Pan Pacific Park hosted the 2015 gala dinner with the theme: The Legacy of Woman in Gold. The evening benefited the museum which is the oldest survivor founded Holocaust museum in the United States. Honorees included E. Randolph Schoenberg (president, Museum Board of Directors), Richard B. Jones (managing director at Merrill Lynch, LA), and Stacey Janks Jasper, a social science teacher and educator whose work is vital to LAMOTH. Special guests Phil Altmann (Marie Altmann’s grandson), and David Seigel (Consul General of Israel) also attended.

A heartfelt taped message from Helen Mirren launched the gala. Mirren expressed her admiration for the late Maria Altmann, who she portrayed in the film The Woman in Gold. The Oscar-buzz for that inspiring film was the top topic at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel reception. Maria, an Austrian-American Jewish refugee from Nazi Austria, became renown for her successful legal campaign to reclaim from the Government of Austria five family-owned paintings by the artist Gustav Klimt. The paintings were stolen by the Nazis during WWII. Randy Schoenberg represented Maria Altmann in “Republic of Austria v. Altmann” resulting in the successful return of the Klimt paintings including Woman in Gold. Richard B. Jones was Mrs. Altmann’s adviser and shared her love of opera, and when Jones received his honor he shared it with the Altmann family.

The Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust in Pan Pacific Park has a permanent collection that features some of the most valuable Holocaust materials in the world, and the museum recently opened a “Woman in Gold” exhibit, named for Altmann’s famous work of art. Visit www.lamoth.org. #
