A Sinatra Holiday Bash, Christmas My Way at the El Portal Theatre

For a “Ring-a-ding-ding” show that will ring in the holidays with some swinging Sinatra songs, “Christmas My Way” is at the historic El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood.

Four great performers make up the cast of the show that puts the spotlight on the classics from Frank Sinatra’s songbook, and especially the holiday standards he recorded. Jason Graae, Luca Ellis, Beth Malone and Heather Lee are the talented singers who showcase more than 40 of Old Blue Eyes’ favorites. And they are backed by one of the hottest jazz trios in the business, lead by musical director Vince DiMura.

The show is the latest musical homage to Frank Sinatra created by playwrights David Grapes and Todd Olson, who have done the “My Way” series of shows. It is also directed by Grapes, who is passionate about the Sinatra legacy. He said, “This is not an impersonation of Sinatra. Nobody plays him, but we pay tribute to him as a great musical artist. He was the greatest song stylist of the 20th century, who has left his imprint on his collection of hits.”

Among Sinatra’s swinging numbers featured are “Fly Me to the Moon,” “New York, New York,” “That’s Life,” “Love and Marriage,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” and “The Lady Is A Tramp,” plus many holiday tunes.

As the arranger of all the numbers in the show, DiMura (a renowned jazz artist) plays with the band throughout and offers the audiences a treat by creating a cool musical vibe. DiMura noted humbly, “Music like this doesn’t need me, because it affects the audience by itself. It’s contagious, like a virus it will infect people who will be humming the songs long after they have left the theater.”

Audiences are going to have a good time with the concert that plays out like a musical party. And Grapes said, “This show is a little more adult than your standard holiday fare. It has a Rat Pack feel to it, irreverent, more like scotch straight up. But it’s also an incredibly romantic show, with some of the most romantic songs ever written. So it’s a great night out and a great way to celebrate.”

“Christmas My Way” is playing at the El Portal Theatre from December 15 to 31st, offering a great New Year’s Eve bash to start 2013 with a swinging good time. Go to www.elportaltheatre.com.
