Meze Headphones – A Strong Contender in Quality Headphones

We have discovered the factory issued earbuds that accompany smartphones are an abomination when it comes to enjoying the music the way the artist created their work. The technology sector has been striving for decades to deliver fine audio reproduction directly to the ears of the listener. Meze has applied this same ethic to their line of headphones. Meze Audio was founded in 2011 in Baia Mare, Romania.

The Meze 99 Neo is a fine balance of superb audio quality, comfortable design and affordability.

The coal black textured earcups provide a comfortable over the ear fit, and the soft ear pads (made from medium density memory foam) allow for hours of listening without the dreaded fatigue. A well-designed stamped manganese spring steel headband delivers consistent pressure across your head. The headphones are surprisingly light, further enhancing the experience (less than 10 ounces without cables). Other key hardware components are cast zinc alloy with electroplated coating, which augurs well for longevity. The gold plated plugs are an elegant touch.

The sound delivered is crisp and smooth, with no noticeable distortion at either end of the spectrum. Stereo separation was excellent, and unlike certain brands (I am looking at you Beats), there is no distorted bass delivery.

I put the headphones through my usual strategy. Led Zeppelin III is ideal, as it is the most versatile of the band’s albums. From the thundering opening track the 99 Neo delivered the bass and drums with aplomb. By the time the Brits moved into side two, the delicacy of the acoustic guitars and mandolins was smooth and supple.
